Report: Flyers to host 2012 Winter Classic

Published May. 13, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

The New York Rangers will play the Flyers in the 2012 NHL Winter Classic in Philadelphia, Phillyburbs.com reported Friday.

The outdoor game, usually held on New Year's Day, will reportedly be played Jan. 2 at Citizens Bank Park, home of the Phillies.

Lincoln Financial Field is not available because the Eagles play host to the Redskins on Jan. 1, which next year falls on a Sunday. The full slate of NFL games prompted the NHL to move the fifth-annual event to Monday.

This year's game between the Capitals and Penguins in Pittsburgh had to be moved from afternoon to evening due to weather concerns.

The Rangers have never played in the Winter Classic. The Flyers lost to the Bruins at Fenway Park in 2010.
