NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) The Nashville Predators have extended coach Peter Laviolette's contract through the 2020-2021 season.

General manager David Poile announced the extension Saturday.

Laviolette is going into his third season with Nashville. He is 23 victories away from 500, which only 23 coaches have reached in the NHL. Laviolette also needs 77 games to reach 1,000 games coached.

He coached the Predators to the seventh game of the second round of the playoffs last spring, the furthest the Predators have advanced in the postseason.

Laviolette won the Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2006 and also reached the Stanley Cup Final with Philadelphia in 2010. He also has coached the Islanders.
