Greg Pateryn and Alex Galchenyuk scored 26 seconds apart early in the first period, and the Montreal Canadiens coasted to a 6-0 NHL preseason rout of the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night.

David Desharnais, Michael Bournival, P.K. Subban and Max Pacioretty also scored for Montreal (1-1-1) before a less-than sellout crowd. Peter Budaj and Dustin Tokarsky combined for the shutout.

Cam Ward went all the way and took the loss for the Hurricanes (0-3-3), who will face the Canadiens again on Saturday in Montreal.

The Canadiens scored four goals on 10 shots in the first period. Montreal had a two-man advantage when Subban, who also had two assists, beat Ward from the high slot in the second.
