Nielsen out of game with head injury

Published Mar. 31, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

New York Islanders forward Frans Nielsen has been knocked out of the game against the New York Rangers by a head injury, resulting from a hit into the boards, and won't return.

Nielsen was playing the puck near center ice in front of the penalty box when Rangers forward Marian Gaborik drove him facefirst into the boards with a shoulder to the back with 3:31 left in the first period. Both players fell to the ice, and Gaborik was then jumped by Radek Martinek, who came to Nielsen's defense.

Rangers defenseman Bryan McCabe and Islanders center Zenon Konopka also joined the fray that resulted in three minor penalties for each team.
