New York Rangers vs. Boston Bruins: Blueshirts Renew Rivalry

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

When two Original Six teams get together on Rivalry Wednesday, sometimes it hurts.

Game number 641 in the intense Original Six rivalry between the Boston Bruins and the New York Rangers will renew itself at MSG on Wednesday. The Rangers record in these games is 252 victories, 289 losses, 97 ties and 2 Overtime Losses. In 10 all-time playoff series, the Rangers have only won 3.

The netminder situation for the Bruins is one that is in shambles. First off, starter Tuukka Rask is not playing, but day-to-day status. His backup, Anton Khudobin will be sidelined for about three weeks with an upper-body injury. This put the Bruins on scramble mode and they brought two goalies up from AHL Providence.

They are Malcolm Subban, younger brother of Nashville’s PK and Zane McIntyre.

As of this writing: Malcolm started the Bruins 5-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild and McIntyre served as his backup. So the Rangers will be facing either Malcolm Subban in a back-to-back situation or Zane McIntyre in his NHL debut.

Either way, I give the Blueshirts the goalie edge with Henrik Lundqvist going for the home team.

    Who’s Hot and Who’s Not

The Bruins are coming off of two consecutive losses. Saturday they dropped a 4-2 contest against the Montreal Canadiens. Then on Tuesday, they were shutout by the Minnesota Wild, 5-0. The Rangers, on the other hand, are coming off a scintillating back-to-back over the weekend, in which they gained four out of a possible four points.

In Washington, they spotted the Caps a two-goal lead and then scored the next four to secure a 4-2 victory. Sunday, they spotted the Arizona Coyotes a one-goal lead ad on the strength of a Dan Girardi slapshot, won the game 3-2.

Boston stands at 3-3-0 and New York stands at 4-2-0.

    Team Scoring Leaders

The Bruins are led by Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak. The former has 3 goals and 6 assists for a team-leading 9 points, and the latter has 4 goals and 3 assists for 7 points. The Rangers counter with Chris Kreider and his 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points and Mika Zibanejad with 2 goals and 4 assists, for 6 points.

    Bold Prediction

The Blueshirts will come out on top of game 641 in this rivalry by a score of 4-1.
