New York Islanders Welcome Back One of Their Favorites Sons

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The New York Islanders take on the not absolutely worst team in the league, the Toronto Maple Leafs in Brooklyn. As a former #1 in the draft and a former #1 in our hearts come to town.

The New York Islanders welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Barclays Center with former Islander Matt Martin in toe. Oh, and that Austin Matthews kid too.

After the heartfelt good-bye as Martin left as a free agent, and was subsequently snatched up by the Maple Leafs for what was a nice chunk of change, he comes back wearing Toronto’s blue and white.

Along with Martin come the likes of Auston Matthews and William Nylander, both shortlist candidates for the Calder, with 10 points each to their name from their opening eight games.

Add Mitch Marner to the mix and you have the top players from the Swiss National League A (Matthews), American Hockey League (Nylander), and the Ontario Hockey League (Mitch Marner).

Doesn’t mean the Leafs are a fantastic team, they still hold a record that’s below .500 with two wins, three losses, and three overtime losses. But then again the Islanders aren’t much better right now either.

The Islanders might have an extra win but they’ve got five losses on the season. None coming in overtime. Just straight regulation losses.

So while the Leafs might be losing games, at least their kids are entertaining to watch. For the Isles, were losing game and negatives are outweighing the positives. Between Ladd not scoring, Halak seemingly wanting out, bad ice quality, and losing to a contentious Sidney Crosby winner, it’s hard to make space to remember that Anthony Beauvillier has five points.

Where to watch the game today:

Venue: Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NYC
TV: MSG+
Radio: AM970 The Answer, 88.7 WRHU-FM, 103.9FM WRCN
