New York Islanders Try to Make it Four in a Row for Tampa

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The New York Islanders take on the Tampa Bay Lightning in Brooklyn. We can say this is going to be payback for the playoffs but we know the players have  forgotten about that.

When teams face each other in the playoffs were always reminded that the regular season doesn’t matter anymore. The playoffs are a different beast. Same goes for the following season. The narrative between the new york islanders and the lightning tonight will be about the rematch, but it’s really about the two points.

Both teams have hit a bit of a rough patch to start the season. The Isles are sixth in the metropolitan division with only three wins from their opening nine games. The Lightning aren’t any better, with three losses in a row to fall 5-4-0 on the season.

The Isles depth scoring has shown its strength recently with a 5-1 demolishing of the Toronto Maple Leafs. But the lightning aren’t the Maple Leafs. This is a team staked with attacking talent. Scoring just a single goal a game in their last three outings is not common for this team. At some point, the floodgates are going to open.

So what do the Isles have to do to prevent the scoring floodgates to open on them? Stay out of the box.

Tampa is clicking at a 23.5% efficiency on the power play, with eight goals on 23 chances. And the isles haven’t been the pinnacle of discipline this season. With an average of 3.4 shorthanded opportunities per game. Give the Lightning and Steven Stamkos three chances on the man advantage and they’ll make them pay for it.
