New York Islanders Training Camp Cuts So Far

BY foxsports • October 3, 2016

The New York Islanders pre-season just began a few days and it’s already almost over. The kids only have two more games to prove themselves. So who’s out already?

The pre-season started for the New York Islanders on September 26th against the Philadelphia Flyers and will end on the 9th against the Washington Capitals.

The kids in the system have looked fairly impressive so far. If you don’t count that 9-2 cumulative drubbing our split-squad received at the hands of the Rangers and Flyers.

Barzal is proving he’s the type of player we thought he was. Ho-Sang is being as electric as can be. Maybe he keeps his word about being the best in his draft class. And Anthony Beauvillier has been a delight to watch.

That’s no even mentioning the great contributions from Pulock and Pelech on the blueline. The Islanders system is stacked for the next few years.

The Unlucky

But what about those that haven’t made the team. Those that have been either released from their PTOs, sent back to their junior team, or just sent packing in general? Who are they and where did they go?

Eamon McAdams was reassigned to Bridgeport.

Parker Wotherspoon, sent back to juniors (Tri-City Americans)

Mitchell Vande Sompel, sent back to juniors (Oshawa Generals)

David Quenneville, sent back to juniors (Medicine Hat Tigers)

Loïc Leduc, reassigned to Bridgeport

Patrick Culity released from a PTO

Connor Jones released from a PTO

Bracken Kearns cleared waivers and was reassigned to Bridgeport

Ben Holmstrom cleared waivers and was reassigned to Bridgeport

Carter Verhaeghe, reassigned to Bridgeport

Kyle Schempp, reassigned to Bridgeport

Josh Winquist released from a PTO.

Some of these players were brought in as depth for the camp and had a slim-to-none chance of earning a spot in the organization (PTOs). Some of the kids knew very well that this wasn’t their year for an NHL spot, but being placed in the AHL is a big step. Players like Loic Leduc are probably thrilled to be a step up from where he was last season.

With another week to go, and two more games to be played, the cuts will keep coming. And then we’ll get to see what fate awaits players like Barzal, Ho-Sang, and Beauvillier.
