New York Islanders: Trading Without Jeopardizing The Future
The New York Islanders have been a hot hockey team as of late. They have been able to propel themselves into the playoff picture, and that can make for some tough decisions when the trade deadline approaches.
It’s safe the say the New York Islanders have been playing their best hockey of the season since Doug Weight has gained the head coaching responsibilities. They now find themselves three points out of playoff contention with a huge game looming against the Flyers.
The Islanders were long thought to be sellers at the deadline, but should now find themselves as buyers. Our own Eric Vogel put out an article a couple of days ago highlighting Garth Snow’s deadline resume.
Looking at the past couple of deadlines you will not see a big deal involving the Isles. The biggest name trade was the Thomas Vanek trade back in October of 2013. There were mixed feelings about the trade because fan favorite, Matt Moulson, was moved to Buffalo.
Looking Forward
Some may think the Islanders are one elite winger away from going on a big run to make the playoffs and possibility do some damage. I put out a tweet a few days ago to see who Islander fans would rather trade between Ryan Strome and Brock Nelson.

As you can see, though a small sample size, most fans want to see Strome moved. After a lethargic start Strome has picked up his game of late and has six points in his last five games. Nelson had two goals in the last game including the overtime winner against the Maple Leafs.
Fans are excited to watch Michael Dal Colle, Josh Ho-Sang, and Ryan Pulock with the big club. There was a time when Strome was a prospect that fans couldn’t wait to see. I would have no problem if the Islanders make a trade to ignite playoff talks.
That being said I do hope the Islanders use caution, and do not jeopardize the future with a shortsighted deal.
