New Ducks D Sutton out 6-8 weeks with broken thumb

Published Oct. 12, 2010 9:19 p.m. ET

Anaheim Ducks defenseman Andy Sutton will be out for six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on his broken right thumb.

Sutton had surgery Tuesday in Los Angeles.

The veteran defenseman was hurt in his first game with Anaheim while fighting Detroit's Ruslan Salei.

The Ducks signed Sutton as a free agent in the offseason, expecting him to play a major role on their revamped defense. Fellow newcomer Toni Lydman missed all of training camp and hasn't played yet after a strange bout of double vision possibly related to migraine headaches.

Anaheim signed free-agent defenseman Andreas Lilja on Monday.

Anaheim was outscored 13-2 during three season-opening road losses. The Ducks' home opener is Wednesday against Vancouver.
