New Bruins GM faces lengthy to-do list

Published Apr. 23, 2015 12:11 p.m. ET

The Bruins have not found a new general manager yet, but they do have a lengthy list of tasks for whoever will fill the role. The Boston Globe compiled a list of issues the new GM will face and found at least 11 pressing questions for the new GM to address.

Among the most difficult tasks are deciding whether defensemen Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg need to be replaced and figuring out what to do with Milan Lucic.

Lucic has the contract of a star, top-line forward but often performs at a level much lower than that. He averaged 0.54 points per game this season, his lowest total since the 2009-10 season, but at 26 years old, he still has years of better hockey looming in the future. Lucic has just one year remaining on a three-year deal, meaning the Bruins need to decide whether to get something out of Lucic by trading him now, or risk losing him for nothing after next season.

Chara and Seidenberg are both much older than Lucic at 38 years old and 34 years old respectively, and neither is nearly as effective as each used to be. Both also suffered significant knee injuries, which casts doubt on their ability to improve in the coming years. But Chara and Seidenberg once were one of the best shutdown pairs in the NHL, and parting with them won't be easy.

Bruins fans are eager to find out who the new GM will be, but finding a GM clearly is just the first step of a long and difficult summer of change.
