Linesman's back slams hard onto ice, leaves game

Published Feb. 5, 2010 2:13 a.m. ET

NHL linesman Steve Barton tried to avoid Nashville defenseman Alexander Sulzer along the right boards during the first period, lost his footing and slammed down backward hard, bouncing the back of his head on the ice.

Barton stayed down on the ice for a couple minutes before being helped off the ice Thursday night. No word was immediately available on his injury, but officials said he would not return.

Sulzer was bringing the puck up the right boards when Barton tried to lift his feet up out of the way. Instead, they tangled, and Barton was twisted before crashing to the ice at 10:50 of the first period of Nashville's game with Colorado.
