Leafs hit another low in coaching location ranking
Toronto seems to be the no-man's land of the coaching world, or at least it is according to a new ranking by USA Today. The periodical looked at six cities with coaching vacancies and ranked them from best to worst as possible destinations for Mike Babcock. Not surprisingly, Toronto came in last.
"The historic franchise might have to strip down to the chassis before the rebuilding truly begins," USA Today wrote. "Depending upon whether Phil Kessel or Dion Phaneuf get traded, the Maple Leafs could again be among the NHL's worst teams. Although Brendan Shanahan is in charge, the Maple Leafs don't have a general manager. Anyone who takes this job will face considerable pressure, plus won't know what his roster will look like the next couple of seasons. It could be three or four seasons before the Leafs contend."
The Leafs have not had a coach last more than four seasons since Pat Quinn served as coach from 1998 to 2006. The team made the playoffs just once in the last 10 years.
