UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) Defenseman Ryan Murphy had a goal and an assist and Drew MacIntyre made 24 saves to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Islanders 4-2 in an exhibition game Wednesday night.

Murphy opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 8:29 of the first, beating goalie Jaroslav Halak. Jeff Skinner, Nathan Gerbe and Andrej Sekera also scored for Carolina.

Ryan Strome and Casey Cizikas scored for New York. Islanders captain John Tavares played for the first time since sustaining a season-ending knee injury in the Olympics.

Skinner made it 2-0 at 53 seconds of the second with another power-play goal, and Sekera scored 3:16 into the third on a two-man advantage.

Cizikas had a short-handed goal 10 seconds later for New York.

Gerbe made it 4-1 with 2:10 left, and Strome scored with 1:27 to play.

The clock on the scoreboard above center ice wasn't working during the first period and part of the second. Thus the public address announcer had to periodically update times remaining and elapsing on penalties
