The man known as Mr. Hockey has a new name: Dr. Hockey.

Gordie Howe has received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.

University president Peter MacKinnon said in a speech to graduates Thursday that Howe rose above adversity and overcame great odds to become a dominant figure in hockey.

MacKinnon also recognized Howe's charity work, including his Howe Foundation that raises money so children can play hockey.

Howe was born in Floral, Saskatchewan, and grew up in Saskatoon.

The Hall of Famer won four Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings in the 1950s and six Hart Trophies as the league's most valuable player.
