F Mike Fisher says Nashville Predators good fit
Mike Fisher knows there were probably several teams that would have traded for him. In the end, he thinks the Ottawa Senators picked the best option by sending him to Nashville.
Fisher says the Predators will be a good fit for him because of their aggressive style of play and contention for a spot in the playoffs. Plus, he's already knows several of the players and is plenty comfortable with Nashville, where he and his wife, country music star Carrie Underwood already have a home.
''I spend a lot of time there, and I'm comfortable there. I think it's a great setup for me, and I can't wait for it,'' Fisher said in a teleconference Friday. ''I think that there were other teams, but (general manager Bryan Murray) wanted to do what he thought would be good for me when he made the deal, and I was thankful for that.''
The Senators traded the forward to the Predators on Thursday for a first-round draft pick and a future conditional pick. Ottawa is last in the Southeast Division with 42 points while Nashville is five points behind first-place Detroit in the Central.
The 30-year-old Fisher, who has 24 points this season, said he's excited to have a chance at the playoffs with Nashville after a disappointing season in Ottawa with a team plagued by a bad start and injuries. He's been with the Senators ever since they drafted him 44th overall in the 1998 NHL draft.
The Predators were trying to get his work visa completed Friday so he could be in the lineup Saturday night against Colorado.
''It's definitely the most frustrating season for me that I've ever played. Losing is not very fun at all,'' he said. ''They had to get rid of salary there and rebuild, and if that's the case then it's a great opportunity for me to come to a great team and a great situation.''
Fisher got to know Predators coach Barry Trotz, defenseman Shea Weber and center Matthew Lombardi while playing for Canada's team at the 2009 World Championships.
He's also plenty familiar with the city, having spent time there with Underwood, a five-time Grammy Award winner who won the fourth season of ''American Idol.'' The couple married last summer in Georgia, and Fisher said his wife was ''emotional'' about his trade.
''Obviously she was excited, but she knows it's tough and there's plenty of emotions and that leaving a place you love is hard,'' he said.
