The Edmonton Oilers put up a strong fight in their first preseason game against the Calgary Flames, as both split-squad teams put up wins against the Flames Monday. Edmonton’s home team won 4-2, and the Oilers away group won 2-1. This marks the first time the Oilers have won a game at Roger’s Place.

Iiro Pakarinen opened the scoring for Edmonton at Roger’s Place, scoring on a feed from Mitch Moroz and Kyle Platzer. The team would fall 2-1 after the first period, until Matthew Benning tied it up on the power play around three minutes into the third period. Tyler Pitlick scored to give the Oilers the lead, and then assisted on Kris Versteeg’s goal that gave Edmotnon the 4-2 win.

In Calgary, things were quiet until the third period, when Anton Slepyshev struck on the man advantage. Jere Sallinen would score an empty netter 11 minutes later, and the Oilers would fight for a shutout until Mark Giordano scored with nine seconds remaining in regulation.

Here are some takeaways from both games that you should know going forward.

    – Milan Lucic was an alternate captain for the Oilers and looked great in his first preseason game with Edmonton. He got a minor penalty for roughing and finished the night with a plus-1, three shots and a hit.

    – Oscar Klefbom and Adam Larsson combined on a pairing to form the Swedest combination possible. Seriously. The two countrymates each picked up an assist. Klefbom had four shots, and Larsson finished with a shot and three hits.

    – Tyler Pitlick looked solid for the Oilers Monday, putting up a goal and assist in the third period. He appeared to possess great speed and made the most of his opportunities on offense.

    – Before being pulled in favor of a goaltending carousel in Calgary, Jonas Gustavsson stopped 11 of 11 shots and looked sharp in net for the Oilers.

    – Drake Caggiula was denied on a penalty shot opportunity, but had a good all-around game. He created chances, had four shots and was on the ice for a bit over 18 minutes.

    – The Jujhar Khaira that I saw Monday night was solid. Not only was he physically involved with the game, but he had beautiful dangles and entries into the zone that created plenty of scoring chances. As he finished the night with three hits and two shots, Khaira made the most of his 13 minutes of ice time and proved ready to fight for a spot on the opening night roster.

    – Slepyshev didn’t fail to impress, and looked just as he did last season: pretty good. He likely won’t get the start on the Oilers opening night roster this season, but nonetheless proved to do well and even score a goal.

Edmonton will continue its preseason Wednesday against the Vancouver Canucks, and trainign camp will resume Tuesday morning, likely with more cuts by the end of the day. Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will also rejoin Edmonton for camp Wednesday.
