Defenseman Sheldon Brookbank has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Anaheim Ducks.

Brookbank would have been an unrestricted free agent this summer, but agreed Wednesday to stay with the Ducks.

The 29-year-old defenseman played in a career-high 66 games last season, scoring nine points and accumulating 114 penalty minutes. The longtime AHL defenseman finally won a regular NHL job with New Jersey in 2007-08 before the Devils traded him on Feb. 3, 2009, to Anaheim, the franchise that originally signed him in 2003.

The Ducks also have defensemen Lubomir Visnovsky, Steve Eminger and Brett Festerling under contract for next season. Captain Scott Niedermayer hasn't announced whether he'll return to Anaheim or retire.
