Former NHL All-Star Adam Oates is filling the final assistant spot on John MacLean's coaching staff with the New Jersey Devils.

Oates was hired on Tuesday and is joining fellow assistant Larry Robinson and goaltending coach Chris Terreri under MacLean, who was named head coach by the Devils on June 17. The 47-year-old Oates was an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning last season.

The former center had 341 goals and 1,079 assists in 1,337 NHL games over 19 seasons with Detroit, St. Louis, Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, Anaheim, and Edmonton.

Oates, a five-time All-Star, retired as a player in 2004.
