Darren Helm: Positively dangerous for Detroit

When Darren Helm was a rookie with the Red Wings in 2007-08, his nickname was "Danger".

The moniker wasn't necessarily a good thing. As Detroit coach Mike Babcock told M Live, Helm would fly around the ice so fast that he was a danger to everyone on the ice, whether they were teammates or opponents.

If Helm had that same nickname today, it would be for much more positive reasons. Helm hit a career-high 15 goals this season and recorded 33 points. He earned a spot on a line with Pavel Datsyuk, one of the best forwards in the game, and will be looked to as a key factor for the Red Wings in the remainder of the series against the Lightning.

That role must be nice for Helm after years battling a plethora of injuries. He battled through everything from a sprained MCL, a fractured cheekbone, lacerated tendons, the obligatory concussion and a mysterious back injury.

So while the points and the elevated role are both nice for Helm, he said he is most happy about his health.

"It's been a few years since I've been healthy and comfortable suiting up without having to worry about anything that's going on with my body," Helm told M Live. "I'm confident with the way things are holding up to just go out there and play my game."
