Daniel Sedin scored a hat trick but the Vancouver crowd forgot to celebrate

If someone scores a hat trick and nobody throws their hat onto the ice, is it even really a hat trick?

That's the question Daniel Sedin might be asking after Vancouver Canucks fans failed to toss their hats in celebration on Saturday when Sedin scored three goals in a 6-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Yahoo! Canada estimated that one or possibly even two hats were thrown on the ice.

The lack of enthusiasm would have been understandable if the Canucks were playing in Chicago, but Saturday's game was at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

The fans seemed excited enough by the goal as they jumped out of their seats to cheer, high-five and bang on the glass. They just did not keep the hat trick tradition of tossing hats onto the ice. The dearth of caps left SportsNet hockey insider Elliotte Friedman mystified.

"I know hats are very expensive, but what is going on in Vancouver?" Friedman asked on the Canucks' post-game show. "Vancouver, you can do better."

Fans on Twitter attempted to make up for fans at the rink. The hashtag #TweetDanielAHat trended briefly on social media Saturday night.
