Dallas Stars Release Traverse City Tournament Roster

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Dallas Stars will once again send troops to Traverse City, Michigan to compete in the eight-team prospect tournament two weeks from now.

Well, it’s happening again. The Dallas Stars are sending a full team of prospects up to Michigan to compete in the annual Traverse City Tournament.

The tourney has been hosted by the Detroit Red Wings for multiple years now, and the Stars always send up a prospect group. It’s an excellent opportunity for the prospects to gain experience and even potentially play prospects from other teams that they may compete against at the NHL level in the years to come.

The eight NHL teams sending prospects to this year’s tournament are the Detroit Red Wings, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Columbus Blue Jackets, Carolina Hurricanes, St. Louis Blues, Chicago Blackhawks, and New York Rangers.

Here is the Stars official roster for the tournament, which will last from September 16-20.

The first thing you may notice is that there are only a couple of names you are familiar with. Unlike in years past, the Stars seem to be sending some of the extremely young talent this season and were not shy about calling on names from the OHL, WHL, and even the KHL.

Some of the noticeable names for the everyday Dallas Stars fan include 2015 first round pick F Denis Gurianov, who is expected to play in the AHL this season. Others include forwards Devin Shore, Cole Ully, Remi Elie, and defenders Chris Martenet, Niklas Hansson, and Ludwig Bystrom. Not to mention goaltenders Philippe Desrosiers, Landon Bow, and Henri Kiviaho.

Last season, the Stars ran into some tough times in the middle of the tournament. After winning their first game against Chicago by scoring three goals in the final minute, the Stars fell into a rut. They coughed up two straight 4-2 leads and fell to a record of 1-1-1. Their 5-4 regulation loss to Detroit assured that Dallas would not be able to play for the title.

Instead, they thumped the Wild 7-2 and finished fifth overall in the tourney.

This is a new opportunity, though. The new list of prospects are definitely an intriguing bunch, and who knows what they could accomplish.

Also, this will be a prime chance for prospects to prove their NHL readiness. After all, Mattias Janmark, Radek Faksa, Jason Dickinson, Esa Lindell, and Devin Shore all played for Dallas. Each one of these players received NHL playing time last season, and Faksa and Janmark were full-time members of the roster.

It’s bound to be an enjoyable ride to take in, and something to definitely keep an eye on in the midst of the World Cup of Hockey.
