Dallas Stars Lose Another Center: Janmark Out Six Months
Another one. The Dallas Stars injuries continue to grow, and at this point they don’t even have a solid center group to put forth for opening night.
The Dallas Stars may be on the brink of making history. It’s highly possible that what they are currently stumbling upon has never occurred before.
Losing one key player to injury before the regular season even starts is never an easy obstacle to overcome. The sad thing is that it’s a typical occurrence for one or two teams each year no matter what the sport.
But what about losing six key players to injury before the 2016 regular season kicks off? That has to be some sort of record, right? That’s exactly what the Dallas Stars are enduring at the current moment.
First it was Tyler Seguin with a hairline fracture in his heel acquired during the World Cup of Hockey. Next was Radek Faksa with concussion-like symptoms from a hit in the World Cup. Then Ales Hemsky. Then Cody Eakin. Then Devin Shore.
And now it’s Mattias Janmark. The 23-year-old was spotted on crutches at the Dallas Stars practice facility yesterday, but no updates were given.
This morning, some light was finally shed on the subject. It was reported that Janmark is suffering from a genetic condition called osteochondritis dissecans which involves the joints in the knee. It is described as “a joint disorder where cracks form in the cartilage and bone, causing blood depravation to the bone.”
According to Stars GM Jim Nill, there is an 80 percent chance at making a full recovery. Janmark will undergo surgery in the coming days and will require five to six months of rehabilitation. There is a chance that he plays at the end of this season, but we won’t know until the surgery is finished and it is made clear that Janmark truly can still play.
This is another fatal blow to the Dallas Stars offense, specifically in the dot. Seguin, Eakin, Faksa, and Janmark have all been injured within the past three weeks, and only Faksa is healthy enough to play at the moment.
At this point, the Stars will be overwhelmingly shorthanded to begin the year on offense. Janmark became the stand-in leader for Dallas in the absence of their leaders over the past few games, but now he’s gone.
It will be interesting to see if the Dallas Stars firepower offense can still light up the scoreboard even without some of it’s brightest scorers.
Take a breath, Stars fans. The first few weeks of the 2016-17 regular season are going to be entertaining to say the least. Just be ready for some big changes. Time to adapt.
