Chicago Blackhawks' Win Streak Ends In 3-2 OT Loss To Capitals
The Chicago Blackhawks’ seven-game win streak ended in overtime Friday as the visiting Capitals grabbed a win
In a thrilling Veterans Day matchup against the Washington Capitals at United Center, the Chicago Blackhawks’ Marian Hossa tied the game with 22 seconds remaining in regulation. But Marcus Johansson’s game-winning goal midway through extra time snapped the ‘Hawks’ win streak at seven games.
Nonetheless, the Blackhawks have earned at least one point in 10 straight games and sit atop the Central Division with a record of 10-3-2.
Here are a couple observations from the result in the Madhouse on Madison.
Cardiac kids
As we’ve seen so many games this season, the Blackhawks fell behind early — this time when the powerplay unit gave up a shorthanded goal for the second time in three games.
Brian Campbell managed to convert on the same powerplay to tie it 1-1, but the Capitals scored again to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
The two teams went on to trade an endless stream of heart-stopping, A-plus scoring chances before the Blackhawks finally mustered the latest of their many third-period rallies to force overtime on Hossa’s third goal in 3 games.
Beagle mania
Veteran center Jay Beagle led the Capitals, scoring two goals in the first period. The first was the shortie off a nifty 2-on-1 pass from T.J. Oshie, and the second was a wraparound that went in off Campbell’s stick to the right of Corey Crawford.
Goaltenders shine
Blackhawks goalie Crawford turned in another stellar performance, stopping 24 of 27 shots on goal, including several from point-blank range. Backup Scott Darling relieved Crawford for 78 seconds in the second period and made one huge save on a breakaway bid by Oshie before Crow returned after resolving an equipment issue.
Last season’s Vezina Trophy winner, Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby, stole the game by stopping 32 of 34 Blackhawks shots to run his season record to 7-3.
The Blackhawks host the league-leading Montreal Canadiens Sunday night. After that, the men in the Indian Head will hit the road for the annual Circus Trip, taking their play on the West Coast and into Canada for the next seven games.
