Carolina Hurricanes Sign Raffi Torres to a PTO
Carolina Hurricanes give enforcer Raffi Torres a PTO. This signing is controversial depending on your opinions of Torres.
Everyone has heard of Raffi Torres. It’s not a secret that he’s an enforcer and often suspended.
The 6-foot, 215-pound wing turns 35 in early October and brings an experienced resume to Raleigh. The enforcer has played in 635 career NHL games.
Despite 635 games, he appeared in only 44 games over the last four seasons. This was due to injuries and a number of suspensions.
Torres’ career began promisingly, as he was drafted fifth overall in 2000 by the New York Islanders.
Francis says Torres has “served his time.” Also stresses it’s PTO, an opportunity to come in and show he can play.
After frustrating the Islanders by failing to break into a regular NHL spot for four years, he was traded to Edmonton.
While he was in Edmonton, he became a viable contributor for the Oilers.
Over time, Torres’ offensive productivity markedly declined while his reputation as a “dirty” player rapidly grew.
He had stints with Vancouver in 2010-11 and with Phoenix from 2011 to 2013. Both of them littered with questionable hits and league-enforced discipline.

Despite being on a PTO it will be hard for Torres to make the team. Even if he does, it will be harder for him to stay.
The Canes already have 13 forwards either on one-way contracts or expected to make the NHL roster. They also have the possibility of adding Julien Gauthier to the mix.
