Buffalo Sabres Stand Alone As NHL's Least-Winningest Team
The Buffalo Sabres had dreams of the playoffs when the season began, but the first month of the season is now the stuff of nightmares.
And then there was one.
Literally: one win.
That’s all the victories the Buffalo Sabres have earned so far in 2016-17, and when Saturday, October 29 begins at midnight, the Sabres will officially own the fewest amount of wins in the NHL.
Yay!
That was not the case this morning, as both Buffalo and the Carolina Hurricanes were stuck at one in the W column. Then, the Hurricanes had to go and do this:
CANES WIN!

Thanks, guys.
So much for the old adage, “Misery loves company.” Carolina probably took a peek at the standings, saw they were lumped in with the Buffalo Sabres, and said to themselves, “F**k that – we’ve gotta get another win!”
Don’t worry, guys: the way the Sabres are playing, you can probably sit tight at two wins for a good week or two.
Sarcasm aside, I foresaw the Sabres having a tough go of things in the month of October way back in August – long before the team lost both Jack Eichel and Evander Kane to injuries. The NHL did not hand Buffalo a friendly schedule to start its 2016-17 season, and I felt the team would be lucky to go 3-3-2.
Technically speaking, the team still could finish the month as I predicted, as the Sabres will close out October with back-to-back games this weekend against Florida and then Winnipeg. If by some miracle the Sabres find a way to win both of these games, I would actually consider a 3-3-2 record a major success, given the team’s current roster and how badly they have looked as of late.
For now, though, the Buffalo Sabres are in an all-too-familiar position: the bottom of the NHL. Fart.
