Boston Bruins F Brad Marchand Signs 8-Year Extension Worth $49 Million Dollars to Stay With Club

Boston Bruins F Brad Marchand has inked an eight-year deal worth $49 million dollars, announced Monday via TSN‘s Bob McKenzie, .

So for those of you who were hoping to see Marchand in a Penguins jersey playing alongside Sidney Crosby in 2017-18, sorry about your luck.

If Brad Marchand wants those 61 goals playing with Sidney Crosby, Bruins GM Don Sweeney would need to pull off a miracle blockbuster that isn’t about to happen anytime in the near future.

Players such as Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci, David Backes, and David Pastrnak are still quality options to ensure Marchand not only matches last year’s 37 goals, but surpasses that total entering the 40-goal plateau.

Boston Bruins F Brad Marchand is entering the final year of a four-year contract which carries a cap hit of $4.5 million dollars.

Starting in 2016-17 through 2024-25, Marchand will carry a $6.125 million dollar cap hit. By the time he hits free agency in 2025, Brad will be 37-years-old.

Originally selected 71st overall (3rd round) back in 2006, Marchand is now a seven-year NHL veteran. He’s a five-time 20-plus goal scorer, and is coming off a career-best 37 goals (60 points) in 2015-16. Brad also played a pivotal role in the Bruins Stanley Cup victory back in 2010-11 posting 19 points in 25 games.

    Reaction/Analysis

The extension comes as no surprise given that we already knew both sides were hoping to reach an agreement before the start of the new season.

This is a great signing for the Bruins and one that was necessary. Marchand’s game continues to blossom with age proving to the hockey world that he’s more than just an agitator/pest. Truth be told though, his effectiveness in getting under opponents skin is almost worth the $6 million alone. If you don’t already love the relatively low cost of this contract, wait a few years and see how it looks.
