Avalanche acquire Matthias in trade with Toronto

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 12:45 a.m. ET

DENVER (AP) The Colorado Avalanche fortified their front line by picking up forward Shawn Matthias in a trade with Toronto on Sunday.

In exchange, the Maple Leafs received forward Colin Smith and a fourth-round pick in the 2016 draft. The 6-foot-4, 231-pound Matthias won't be with Colorado when the team plays Sunday night in Vancouver.

Matthias had six goals and 11 assists in 51 games with Toronto this season. He joins a formidable offense that includes scorers such as Matt Duchene, Nathan MacKinnon, Carl Soderberg, Gabriel Landeskog and Jarome Iginla. Matthias adds more depth as the Avalanche push for a playoff spot.

The 28-year-old Matthias was a second-round pick by Detroit in 2006. He played his first NHL game in 2007-08 with Florida and has 75 goals in 459 career games.
