25 people face Stanley Cup riot charges
Vancouver police announced Wednesday that 25 people faced a total of 61 charges for their alleged involvement in the Stanley Cup riots in June, following the Canucks' loss to the Boston Bruins.
The suspected rioters come from Vancouver, North Vancouver, Burnaby, Maple Ridge, Richmond, Delta, Surrey and Seattle, Canada's CBC News reported. There was one juvenile among those charged, with the others ranging in age from 18 to 33.
Crown Counsel approved the charges and head of the Integrated Riot Investigation Team, Inspector Les Yeo, said more charges could be approved soon.
"We are very encouraged by the approval of these 61 charges and we will continue to work closely with the special prosecution team as even more charges are expected in the coming days and weeks," Yeo said in a statement.
"We are now another step closer to holding suspected rioters accountable for their actions on June 15."
The Vancouver Police Department recommended 163 charges against 60 people in late October.
The riots broke out in downtown Vancouver immediately after the Canucks lost Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Finals, with at least 140 people reported injured and more than 100 arrested.
