Washington Redskins: Jay Gruden Sees Team Overcoming Adversity
Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden had numerous positive takeaways after the team’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Gruden says the team is overcoming adversity.
The 27-20 victory over the Eagles Sunday brings the Redskins to 4-2 on the year. After the win, Gruden acknowledged highlights ranging from the rush-pass balance on offense to the fantastic performance of defensive coordinator Joe Barry over the last several weeks.
I think Joe’s doing a great job. Perry [Fewell] and Robb [Akey] and Greg [Manusky], those guys are doing an excellent job coaching those guys up. But the players are making plays and that’s what it’s about. They’re getting off blocks and they’re making the tackles when they have to make the tackles
On offense, QB Kirk Cousins incorporated 5 different receivers into the passing game. WR Pierre Garcon lead the attack with 6 receptions for 77 yards. WR Jamison Crowder and TE Vernon Davis also provided key support for Cousins in the absence of TE Jordan Reed.
After starting the year 0-2, Gruden recognized that the entire team has overcome a lot to reach 4-2. He sees improvements on both offense and defense. Focus and hard work throughout the week have shaped the Redskins into a group that can compete with any team in the NFL.
I think adversity is our middle name and our guys have learned to deal with it. You have to learn to deal with it here. You know, we’ve had a lot of it here and they’ve overcome it so far and they do a great job of staying together, that’s the most important thing and nobody is throwing helmets over there and kicking tables and dumping water bottles over. They’re all in line and they’re all ready for the next play and that’s what it’s all about. It’s always on to the next one with us. The past is the past. Learn from it but move on to the next play and our guys do a great job of that.
Gruden is looking ahead to a Week 7 matchup with the Detroit Lions. He’ll have key injury updates on players like Reed on Wednesday but emphasized that the Redskins have the “normal bumps and bruises” like all NFL teams.
Redskins players were in high spirits after the division win Sunday. Cousins in particular took to Twitter to show gratitude not only for the team’s play, but also for his choice in post-game attire.
