Vikings GM: 'No question' team wants Adrian Peterson back

The very public chess match playing out regarding Adrian Peterson and his shaky future with the Minnesota Vikings featured yet another move, this time courtesy of general manager Rick Spielman.

Spielman told the Star Tribune‘s Sid Hartman that under no uncertain terms do the Vikings plan on any other endgame but to have Peterson remain with the team.

“Adrian is under contract and a member of our football team,” Spielman told Hartman. “We’ve stated that, our owner has stated it, our head coach has stated it. There is no question that we want Adrian Peterson back on our football team.”

Spielman is accurate in his insistence that the team has put on a united organizational front regarding how they want Peterson back in the fold, although Hartman notes that about the only thing that may change that position would be if the Vikings were blown away by a “blockbuster-type” trade offer they could not refuse.

The general manager’s most recent assertion regarding Peterson’s status with the team comes on the heels of the running back’s agent, Ben Dogra, telling USA Today’s Tom Pelissero that he has been informed that the Vikings have no plans on cutting Peterson.

Dogra then expanded on the report with comments made to FOX Sports 1 NFL Insider Mike Garafolo.

“It was important for me to relay the position the Vikings are taking to Adrian,” Dogra said. “I want to make sure there is absolutely no confusion whatsoever.”

All this of course means either Peterson will remain in a Vikings uniform or be dealt to a team desperate enough to offer a king’s ransom for the soon-to-be 30-year-old running back.

The Arizona Cardinals have been a reported interested party in acquiring Peterson, but the team reportedly scoffed at his current contract status. Peterson is owed $12.75 in base salary for the 2015 NFL season with his base escalating by $2 million in each of the next two seasons.

Cardinals wideout Larry Fitzgerald earlier this week said bringing in Peterson would be a “game-changer” for the team. But the Cardinals, or any other team for that matter, likely don’t want Peterson under his current contract terms, much less what the Vikings will demand in exchange.
