Tom Coughlin: 'Giants will win when we deserve to win'
New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin isn't making any excuses for his team's 5-7 record. During their three-game losing streak, the Giants haven't lost a game by more than six points, but Coughlin doesn't feel as if they deserved to win any of these games.
“We’ll win when we deserve to win. We haven’t done enough things to put us over the top,” Coughlin said during his Monday meeting with the media. “We have got to get back to work. We have four games to go. We’ve got to work extra hard as a coaching staff, and our players will work hard, and we’ve got to win a game and change this negativity and get going in the right direction.”
The 2015 Giants have blown five games where they were leading in the fifth quarter, they've had two losses in overtime, and only one game where they lost by multiple scores. Coughlin wouldn't call that many closes losses a result of luck or coincidence, but simply the result of his team not getting the job done when it counts the most.
“We’re all sick of losing, let’s face it,” Coughlin said. “We’ve had too many close games that went the wrong way at the end of the game. . . . When the game is on the line, we have to step up and make plays.”
Thanks to a Washington Redskins loss on Monday night in Week 13, the Giants are once again tied for first place in the NFC East with the Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles. Over the next three weeks, the Giants will have an opportunity to separate themselves, but they'll have to do so by defeating the Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers and Eagles. Even if they win all three, they will need the Redskins to drop one game or else they stand to lose out on a tiebreaker.
