The Chargers are woefully terrible when it comes to field position

The Chargers rid themselves of an ineffective Jacoby Jones a few weeks back.

But field position problems still persist. According to Football Outsiders, they're the only team in the NFL with an average drive start at their own 20 yard line (20.65).

That means new kick and punt returner Javontee Herndon would do no harm to the team's kickoff statistics by kneeling in the end zone every time. That's not an ideal situation to be in.

The top team in average field position? Unsurprisingly, it's the Patriots (32.04). And six NFL teams begin drive, on average, a full 10 yards deeper than the Chargers currently do.

It's not for a lack of trying. The Bolts have used Branden Oliver and Danny Woodhead in return roles to no avail.

Herndon needs to get going. So does the Chargers defense in forcing three-and-outs. Both would serve to help take some strain off Philip Rivers and an injured offense.
