Texans WR Keshawn Martin parlays preseason into roster spot
A strong preseason performance helped Houston Texans wide receiver Keshawn Martin earn himself a spot on the 53-man roster and convinced the team to carry six wide receivers in Sunday's season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Martin, who is entering his fourth season, caught 12 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown during the preseason. In the exhibition finale against the Dallas Cowboys, he made a strong case for himself with five catches for 31 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown reception.
“I definitely feel pretty good about it,” Martin said, per the Houston Chronicle. “I’ve still got to get better every day. I had a pretty okay camp and I want to continue it into the regular season.
“The preseason is very important, camp is also, but preseason is when you get a chance to play as a team and play a real game. I had a pretty okay preseason. I just tried to take advantage of those opportunities and (tired) to make the team.”
A fourth-round pick in 2012, Martin appeared in all 16 games last season, catching six passes for 78 yards. He also saw time as a punt returner, averaging 6.2 yards per attempt. The 25-year-old said he has more to offer beyond his preseason his preseason contributions.
"I feel like I can definitely help the team out,” Martin said. “Anything the team wants me to do, I’m ready to do whatever.”
