Texans going high-tech in camp
There are plenty of cameras to go around at Houston Texans training camp this summer with the team serving as the focus of this season's "Hard Knocks."
But, in an effort to gain an edge, head coach Bill O'Brien and the team are experimenting with a different type of camera, one attached to a pair of glasses that shows coaches everything the quarterback see during practice.
Offensive coordinator George Godsey discovered the glasses on a recent visit to the University of Central Florida, where he used to coach. Godsey was intrigued and pitched the idea to O'Brien, who gave the go-ahead to try them in camp.
“It seems to be a pretty good tool,” O’Brien said, via the Houston Chronicle. “It’s a camera that allows us to see what the guy’s looking at. We watch the tape with them and kind of coach their eyes because that’s so important for a quarterback when you’re reading coverage.
“A lot of times with young quarterbacks especially, right before the snap they might look down at the ground just to make sure they’re getting the snap. But when you take your eyes off the defense, that’s a tough thing because you have to re-locate the safety and adjust your read on that play.”
Quarterback Tom Savage, who wore the glasses in practice, conceded that they weren't all that fashionable, but they were effective.
"I know I look like a complete idiot, but it works," Savage said. "Coach thinks it’s beneficial to me. It reads where your eyes are and kind of hears the calls in the huddle. We go back and re-watch everything.”
