Steelers WR Wheaton excited to play the slot

With Martavis Bryant emerging as a big play threat on the outside for the Steelers, it was a natural progression to move Markus Wheaton to the inside.

Wheaton saw 119 reps n the slot last season, but he wasn't completely comfortable with the role since he never really played there in college. With a full offseason to learn the nuances of the position, the 5-foot-11, 182-pound receiver is excited at what he can bring to the offense.

"I am excited about doing something different," Wheaton told the Tribune-Review. "I wouldn't say that it is out of my comfort zone, but there are things I need to learn that are different from the outside. Being on the field last year, I learned a lot in terms of reading the defenses and seeing things. Moving me inside, I am still seeing a lot of the same things."

Learning a new position won't come without some hiccups. Wheaton misread a play near the goal during a recent practice, resulting in a Ben Roethlisberger interception.

"That's a position he hasn't played yet, but I think he can be really good there," Roethlisberger said. "I am glad it happened now."

If Wheaton can get things sorted out, he's bound to improve upon last season's totals of 53 catches for 644 yards and two touchdowns.
