Soliai underwent surgery on elbow

Published Mar. 5, 2013 12:00 a.m. ET

A starting member of the Miami Dolphins defense recently had minor surgery.

A source told FOXSports.com that defensive tackle Paul Soliai underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his elbow. Soliai should be recovered and ready for the start of Miami’s offseason workout program in April, the source said.

Soliai started all 16 games for the Dolphins in 2012, finishing with 29 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Soliai and Randy Starks formed a defensive tackle tandem that helped Miami finish 13th in the NFL in run defense with only 10 touchdowns allowed.

The Dolphins used their franchise tag Monday on Starks, which effectively prevents him from testing the free-agent market that opens March 12. Soliai, 29, was Miami’s franchise player in 2011. He then signed a two-year, $12 million contract in March 2012.

A 2007 fourth-round draft pick from Utah, the 6-foot-4, 345-pound Soliai has 47 career starts for Miami in his six NFL seasons.
