Seau won't be charged after arrest
The San Diego County District Attorney's Office said Friday it will not file charges against former NFL linebacker Junior Seau after his arrest earlier this week on suspicion of domestic violence, Fox News Channel confirmed.
Seau, 41, was arrested Sunday night after an incident involving his 25-year-old live-in girlfriend.
After being released on bail from a San Diego detention facility, a little more than an hour after being arrested, Seau drove his SUV off an embankment in Carlsbad, Calif.
He was treated in the hospital for minor cuts and bruises and police said they believed he had simply nodded off and was not trying to kill himself, the Los Angeles Times reported.
No charges or traffic citations were filed.
The San Diego County District Attorney's Office said it had reviewed the Oceanside Police Department's investigation of allegations against Seau and would not be filing charges.
"As with every case we review, we have an ethical duty to file charges only when we believe we can prove them beyond a reasonable doubt," spokesman Paul Levikow said.
Seau, a former University of Southern California standout, left football in January for the second time in a career that spanned 20 years and three NFL franchises.
The fifth overall pick in the 1990 NFL Draft spent 13 seasons with the San Diego Chargers, building a reputation as one of the most feared linebackers in the game.
His play with the Chargers earned him a roster spot on the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team.
Seau announced in January that he had played his final game, but has not yet officially retired from the NFL.
