Schaub presents $200K to hospital

Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub isn't quite ready to talk football.

Schaub and his wife, Laurie, presented a $200,000 check to the Texas Children's Hospital on Monday, a donation through the couple's Gr8 Hope Foundation. Schaub wears No. 8. Last year, the couple raised $108,000 for a playroom at the hospital's campus west of Houston and this year's donation is earmarked for the hospital's child life development program.

The Schaubs, who launched the foundation last year, have three daughters — a 2-year-old and 1-year-old twins.

Schaub is due to make about $7.15 million this year, the last of his current contract. Schaub said he and his wife plan to make helping the hospital a long-term priority, regardless of where he's playing in future years.

''It's something that Laurie and I didn't want to put together just for a flash in the pan, a one- or two-year thing,'' Schaub said. ''We wanted to do this as long as we can, as long as we're here in Houston, wherever we are after that. It's very important for us to be here, because we've developed such a great relationship with the people here. It's important for us to keep this thing going as long as we can.''

Schaub said he'll answer specific questions about his injured right foot and his contract at the start of training camp at the end of next week. After throwing for more than 4,000 yards in 2009 and '10, Schaub fractured the Lisfranc joint in his right foot in Week 10 last season.

''My foot is doing great,'' Schaub said. ''We'll touch on that as we get going here at camp next week. Everything feels good and ready to go.''

T.J. Yates, a fifth-round draft pick, will enter training camp as Schaub's backup after guiding Houston through the final six games of the regular season and two playoff games.

Later Monday, linebacker Darryl Sharpton says he's still recovering from a torn right quadriceps that forced him to miss the entire second half of last season.

''I've kind of transitioned from the training room to the weight room,'' said Sharpton, who made 12 tackles in eight games. ''I'm definitely gotten over that hump, I'm feeling good and I'm pretty much there, ready to go.''

A fourth-round draft pick in 2010, Sharpton is expected to see more playing time this season after the Texans traded DeMeco Ryans to Philadelphia. Sharpton, speaking during a break at the Texans' annual youth football camp, says he expects to be ready when Houston opens training camp on July 27.

''I've been running around, cutting, and doing pretty much everything full-speed,'' Sharpton said. ''There's nothing like actually going out there and running into the `A' gap and blowing up a fullback. There's no kind of preparation you can do for that, so I've just got to go out there and test it.''
