Saints DB Delvin Breaux out six weeks with broken leg

Saints cornerback Delvin Breaux is expected to be out for six weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a broken fibula, head coach Sean Payton announced Monday.

Breaux was helped off the field by trainers during Sunday’s game against the Raiders and taken to the locker room on a cart.

Breaux, 26, is in his second season with the Saints. He played all 16 games last season, including 15 starts, and recorded three interceptions.

A New Orleans native, Breaux committed to play college football at LSU but never appeared in a game for the Tigers after breaking his neck in a high school game. He failed to qualify academically at Division-II Arkansas-Monticello and ended up spending six years out of football before catching on with a semi-pro team. After one season in the Arena Football League and two years in Canadian Football League, Breaux signed with the Saints before the 2015 season.

Breaux’s absence accentuates a lack of experience in the Saints’ defensive backfield. Undrafted rookie Ken Crawley replaced Breaux in Sunday’s game.
