Saints add 17 undrafted free agents
METAIRIE, La. (AP) The New Orleans Saints have agreed to contract terms with 17 undrafted free agents, who'll join the club's six draft picks and selected try out players at rookie camp this weekend, general manager Mickey Loomis announced Monday.
The newly added rookies include Rutgers receiver Brandon Coleman and Grand Valley State center Matthew Armstrong.
The 6-foot-6 Coleman finished his college career tied for the Rutgers all-time touchdown lead with 20.
The 6-2, 302-pound Armstrong, named by the Rimington Award committee as the nation's top Division II center, could compete with another former Grand Valley State player, Tim Lelito, for the starting center job vacated by the departure of Brian de la Puente in free agency.
Among the 17 new rookies are three linebackers, three defensive linemen, three defensive backs, two receivers, two tight ends, two offensive linemen, a quarterback and running back.
The quarterback is Logan Kilgore of Middle Tennessee State and the running back is Tim Flanders of Sam Houston State.
The other receiver is Seantavius Jones of Valdosta State and the other offensive lineman is Michigan State guard Micajah Reynolds.
The linebackers are Brigham Young's Spencer Hadley, Boston College's Kasim Edebali and Colorado's Chidera Uzo-Diribe.
The defensive backs include two players from relatively small programs: safety Pierre Warren, who played for Jacksonville State of the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision; and Brian Dixon from Division II national champion Northwest Missouri State. The other is Kansas State safety Ty Zimmerman.
New Orleans picked up a defensive lineman from in-state: Louisiana-Lafayette's Brandon McCray. He'll work alongside Southern Cal defensive lineman George Uko and Valdosta State's Lawrence Virgil.
Joining the Saints at tight end are two more Louisiana college players: Louisiana-Monroe's Je'Ron Hamm and McNeese State's Nic Jacobs, who transferred to the Cowboys two years ago from LSU.
Meanwhile, Southeastern Louisiana announced that linebacker Cqulin Hubert, who was the 2013 Southland Conference defensive player of the year, accepted a rookie camp invitation from the Saints.
