Russell Wilson injured again, this time in practice
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson suffered his third major injury of the season on Wednesday. It doesn’t look like it will prevent him from playing though.
Russell Wilson did something today that’s he’s never done since being drafted by the Seattle Seahawks. Wilson missed reps in practice due to an injury.
It wasn’t the high ankle sprain he suffered when Ndomukong Suh stepped on Wilson causing his foot to twist in an ungodly fashion. It wasn’t the torn ligament in his knee from when a horse collar tackle caused his knee to bend sideways either.
Wilson finally being limited in practice was due to a new injury. Today during practice, he strained his right pectoral muscle. Officially, he was listed as “limited.”
An injured pectoral isn’t a season ender for a QB. You might remember that Tarvaris Jackson played half a season for the Seahawks with a torn pec back in 2011. Wilson’s injury appears to be less severe than the one Jackson suffered too.
As far as playing through the injury, it is mostly a matter of pain tolerance. From what we know about Wilson, there is very little doubt that he’ll play on Sunday.
The injury is still quite concerning though. Russ now has injuries to both legs and to his throwing shoulder. Only his non-throwing arm is heathy.
Wilson has taken an absolute beating this season while playing behind his terrible offensive line. All those hits are starting to add up. With George Fant, a college basketball player, set to start at left tackle on Sunday, that trend isn’t likely to change.
Wilson’s injury situation led them to add another QB today. They signed Joel Stave to the practice squad to help cover all the practice reps necessary to get the defense prepared for Sunday’s game. That suggests that the coaches feel like this is an issue which is going to linger for Wilson.
Ultimately, the Seahawks need to realize that neglecting their offensive line is getting their QB killed. If they don’t get this fixed, Wilson isn’t likely to make it to the end of the season.
