Reports: Incognito checks himself into psychiatric care unit

Published Feb. 28, 2014 11:35 a.m. ET

Days after admitting he smashed his Ferrari with a baseball bat, former Dolphins lineman Richie Incognito checked himself into an Arizona psychiatric care unit on Thursday night, according to multiple reports. TMZ Sports was first to break the news.

Incognito, who was one of the main antagonists in Ted Wells’ report, which detailed the hazing of offensive lineman Jonathan Martin and other Dolphins’ staff members, has been relatively under the radar since his Twitter rant on Feb. 17.

With all of the off-the-field drama reaching its boiling point, Incognito believed it was taking an emotional toll on him and decided to seek counseling, according to the report.

Incognito is eligible to sign with any NFL team on March 11 when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
