Report: Whisenhunt on Chargers' radar to return as offensive coordinator

Published Jan. 11, 2016 7:10 p.m. ET

The San Diego Chargers could hand their offense back to the man who drove it to the playoffs two seasons ago.

Former Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt is in the running to return to the team as offensive coordinator, according to NBC San Diego. Whisenhunt held the position in 2013.

When he left, the team promoted then-quarterbacks coach Franck Reich to the post. But the team let Reich and several other assistants go after inconsistent outputs in 2014 and 2015.

Whisenhunt'sbest quality could be his run-first approach. The Chargers averaged 122.8 yards per game under his watch -- nearly 38 yards less than they did this past season.

Quarterback Philip Rivers would probably back a return to Whisenhunt's quick-strike offense, too.
