Report: Redskins OLB Ryan Kerrigan undergoes knee surgery
Washington Redskins first-year defensive coordinator Joe Barry will have a missing piece to his unit during next week's organized team activities.
Outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and is expected to miss a portion of the team's OTAs, according to CSN Washington's Tarik El-Bashir.
Kerrigan, 26, had been battling knee soreness and discomfort for some time, reports CSN Washington. Kerrigan is coming off a career-high season in sacks (13.5), appearing in all 16 games.
The Redskins' OTAs open up on Tuesday and run through June 11. The three-day mandatory minicamp begins on June 16.
The Redskins spent a second-round pick on Mississippi State's Preston Smith, who is likely to rotate with Trent Murphy.
"I told Preston Smith this," said Barry, via 247 Sports' Jamie Oakes "If you don't know what to do, watch those guys, watch Ryan Kerrigan in the meeting. Look how he takes notes. Look how he pays attention. Watch him in the weight room, how he works his ever-living butt off."
"I've only been around him for two and a half days, but I'm really liking what I see so far."
Smith will certainly be given more valuable reps over the next couple weeks.
Entering the final year of his rookie deal, Kerrigan is set to earn $7 million in salary.
