Report: Pouncey out for Super Bowl
Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin confirmed Friday that Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey will not play Sunday in Super Bowl XLV due to a high left ankle sprain, the Pittsburgh Tribune Review reported.
Pouncey, who suffered the injury in the AFC Championship victory over the Jets, said earlier in the week that he believed he had a 75 percent chance of playing, contradicting several reports that said he had already been ruled out.
The 21-year-old rookie also said he would not play if he could not practice by Friday, which he subsequently failed to do.
Pouncey will be replaced by Doug Legursky, who struggled with snaps in the 24-19 victory over the Jets.
One of the botched exchanges led to QB Ben Roethlisberger having to fall on the ball in the end zone for a safety in the fourth quarter. Legursky will also be tasked with blocking Green Bay's star defensive tackle B.J. Raji.
