Report: New York Giants showing interest in Aldon Smith

Published Aug. 10, 2015 11:34 a.m. ET

Take this with a grain of salt, but a report surfaced late Sunday night that the New York Giants are showing interest in free agent edge rusher Aldon Smith. The troubled pass rusher was released by the 49ers last week on DUI, hit-and-run and vandalism.

Jordan Schultz' report is followed up by a short explanation on why the Giants would target Smith in free agency.

While the move might seem to make sense from a strictly football standpoint, it simply doesn't mesh up with how the Giants have gone about their business over the course of their franchise's existence. Smith's off field issues fall into a range of players that the Giants have avoided drafting or traded/released in the past.

Smith could be facing a one-year suspension handed down from the league after this recent relapse in judgement. The idea that the Giants need to upgrade their pass rush now, in wake of a potential long-term absence for Jason Pierre-Paul, would not be remedied if Smith were to be suspended for an extended period.

The Giants' pass rush, minus Pierre-Paul, has been off to a hot start so far in training camp. Damontre Moore and Devon Kennard have shown promise, and the Giants believe they can be a big part of the overall pass rush in 2015.
