Redskins place RB Helu Jr. on IR

The Washington Redskins have signed running back Ryan Grant and placed running back Roy Helu Jr. on injured reserve.

Grant arrived for his first practice Wednesday after agreeing to terms late Tuesday. He is expected to back up rookie starter Alfred Morris.

Grant spent five seasons with the Green Bay Packers but has been looking for work the team opted not to re-sign him after last season.

His best season was 2009, when he rushed for 1,253 yards.

Helu has been dealing with turf toe in his left foot since the season opener and had two sore Achilles during preseason. He had only two carries for 2 yards and seven catches for 45 yards this season.

The Redskins' other running back, Evan Royster, is nursing a right knee injury.
