Ravens officially place TE Dennis Pitta on PUP list

Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta will officially miss the first six weeks of the regular season after getting placed on the physically unable to perform list Tuesday.

Pitta is still working his way back from a second major hip surgery and was limited to working out on the side during training camp. He'll be eligible to return in Week 7 against Arizona, but he'll need to get medical clearance first.

The decision to put Pitta on the PUP list was widely expected, with head coach John Harbaugh saying there was no rush to get Pitta back considering his injury was thought to be career-threatening.

"I think he’s planning on being back," Harbaugh said via the team's official website. "It’ll just come down to whether it’s a smart thing to do, and whether it’s what he wants to do, and really, what his family wants to do. He and his wife have to make that decision for themselves. And he’s going to get more information – I’m sure – and just try to do the right thing."

Second-year tight end Crockett Gillmore will enter the season as the team's starting tight end with second-round pick Maxx Williams also in the mix. Gillmore caught 10 balls for 121 yards and a touchdown in his rookie season, when he served mostly as a blocking tight end behind Pitta and the departed Owen Daniels.
