Raiders sign P Marquette King to contract extension

Published Feb. 29, 2016 3:48 p.m. ET

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) The Oakland Raiders have signed punter Marquette King to a long-term contract extension to keep him off the free-agent market.

The Raiders announced the deal with King on Monday, just over a week before he was set to become an unrestricted free agent.

King originally joined Oakland as an undrafted free agent in 2012 and spent his first season on injured reserve. King has played 48 games the past three seasons and is coming off his best season as a pro.

Known for his booming leg when he first arrived, King became much more refined and had a career-high 40.7-yard net punting average last season. He set a franchise record with 40 punts inside the 20 with only four touchbacks.
